Today’s subject is whether or not teamwork is important in journalism. To me, the answer is obvious, of course journalism requires teamwork. When putting out a newspaper you have several different positions on your staff and if you didn’t need team work then you might as well have one person do everything. And that would be absolutely impossible!
While each person in the newspaper has their own individual job, by deadline night everybody’s ideas must come together cohesively to make a polished finished product. The writers must work with the editors to perfect their articles, photographers must work with editors so that pictures can be added to the paper, and everybody must work together to create a functioning layout and something that the world will want to read!
If your team doesn’t have the essential skill of teamwork than everything will fall apart and come the end of the day, week, or month you’re crappy looking newspaper will still have to be published. Like most people, when my name is on something I want it be impressive, I want to have given it 100% of my best effort, and be proud of what I am showing my community. However, my article won’t look good unless the newspaper does, editing has been done, and pictures are added to spice things up.
In a nutshell TEAMWORK IS VITAL TO A NEWSPAPER. Therefore, all journalism teams should probably attend a teambuilding conference, preferably in a beautiful place! 😉 Marin Headlands would be good, or maybe we could all spring for a trip to Hawaii… Now wouldn’t that be nice?
So for our first assignment I’m supposed to talk about good journalism or news sights that myself and other teenagers like to use.
Generally, I’m not the type of person who googles CNN.com each day to see what exciting things are happening in the world. Maybe I should… but realistically that’s probably not about to happen anytime soon. So while CNN and BBC and such are useful, I thought I’d focus on sites I do actually find news on.
My main source tends to be Yahoo!News, because that’s what pops up everytime I open my browser. I don’t always read every artice but I do have a fondness for those Odd News pieces. In fact, if you go to the odd news page right now and look at the 5th video you can find out about real life sleeping beauties, don’t try to tell me that isn’t interesting!! http://news.yahoo.com/odd/
I also absorb a lot of news of off, what else, Facebook! Although its more of a bad habit than an educational sight I really do get pieces of news from here. Seeing as I have a very small attention span I am easily sidetracked and will almost always click on the link to an article somebody has just read. This gets me to read more serious articles because if I see something one of my smarter friends reads something important I might actually do some investigating! Imagine that..
On the other hand, if I already know about an event that has taken place I like to use CNN.com, bbc.com, and if looking for local news, chicoer.com/.
And, finally, when I’m just feeling girly, OMG!, is the best website ever! Click on this link to see horrible fashion mistakes by the Jonas Brothers and more! http://omg.yahoo.com/photos/what-were-they-thinking-1345841529-slideshow/ You know you want to!
Hey everybody! So first off I’d just like to clarify that my name isn’t Elsie Penworthy, I just have an unhealthy obsession with Princess Diaries for somebody of my age… I’m starting a blog for my high school journalism class, so many of these posts will relate to journalism topics, but I’ll be adding stuff of my own as well.
I guess I’ll start with a little bit about myself. My name is Laretta Johnson and I’m 15 years old and a sophomore in high school. My favorite subjects are history and French and I run on the cross country team. I love to spend time with my friends and very large family. I have 2 sisters and about a million aunts, uncles, and cousins. Family parties are always exciting! Aside from school I like to skateboard, snowboard, read, and travel when I can.I live in Chico, CA and I can’t wait to get away from this slightly boring town! Some of my goals include studying abroad for a year in France and attending NYU after high school.
I think thats about it for now, although you should probably also know that I LOVE Harry Potter, Psych, and The Office!
Bye for Now
